Dubai Metro Expands with New Gold Line in Development

The Gold Line will alleviate pressure on the Red Line…

News is out that a new Metro line project is in the works for the Dubai Metro network. A Gold Line will be added to the currently expanding network of lines in one of Dubai’s most frequently used modes of public transport, according to reports in Gulf Business, Metro Rail Today, and Middle East Business Intelligence.

The Gold Line metro link will connect older areas of Dubai to those currently serviced by the Red Line, easing congestion, distributing passenger traffic, and making travel between historic and modern developments more seamless.

The planned route will begin in Bur Dubai, starting from Al Ghubaibah, and extend to Business Bay, while also linking to newer residential developments. Running parallel to the Red Line, it will then veer inland to Business Bay, Meydan, Global Village, and Dubailand’s expanding communities.

This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader strategy to address increasing traffic and long commute times, particularly during peak hours. By encouraging more residents to use public transport, the project aims to reduce the volume of cars on the road, enhancing mobility and sustainability in the city.

The first step toward construction has already been taken, as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has requested proposals (RFP) for a lead consultancy role in the multibillion-dollar project—valued at approximately $5.5 billion. With the procurement process underway, significant progress is expected soon.

More Expansions on the Horizon

In addition to the Gold Line, Dubai’s Metro network is set for further growth with the upcoming Blue Line. The Dubai Metro Blue Line is scheduled to begin operations on September 9, 2029 (09-09-29), as announced by the RTA.

The Blue Line was first discussed back in 2006 as part of a broader metro expansion plan, alongside potential new lines and the extension of the existing Red and Green Lines. Its long-awaited development marks another significant milestone in Dubai’s commitment to enhancing its public transport infrastructure.

After years of planning and delays due to the global economic slowdown, the Dubai Metro Blue Line is officially back on track. The project has been approved by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and construction is set to begin this year. While the official route details are yet to be confirmed, early reports suggest that the Blue Line will connect some of Dubai’s key areas, improving accessibility and reducing congestion.

What to Expect from the Blue Line Route

🔹 Key Connections: The Blue Line will link up with two major metro lines—Centrepoint station on the Red Line and Creek station on the Green Line, making it easier for passengers to transfer between different parts of the city.

🔹 From Centrepoint: The metro will move through Mirdif, with a likely station outside Mirdif City Centre Mall, before heading to Al Warqa, Dubai International City 1, 2, and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and finally stopping at Dubai International Academic City.

🔹 From Creek: The route will extend over Dubai Creek, with stations at Dubai Festival City and Dubai Creek Harbour, before passing through Ras Al Khor Industrial Area and merging with the Centrepoint branch at Dubai International City 1, which will serve as a major transfer hub.
This much-needed expansion will make commuting across Dubai even more seamless, cutting travel times and reducing road traffic.
🚇 Stay tuned for more updates as construction progresses!
